    Screen - BBC

BBC conducted a very detail survey and analysis of sleep. The datas are translated into very meaningful and digestable information about men and women’s sleeping patterns, sleeping time, sleep length and etc.

However, there is no concrete information about people sleeping lesser over the years.

    Screen - Talk About Sleep

“To eliminate muscle and many other sources of pain, it is critical to get 8-9 hours of solid, deep sleep each night on a regular basis. Disordered sleep is, in my opinion, a major underlying process that perpetuates pain…

In fact, inadequate sleep has repeatedly been shown to contribute to pain. In one study of fibromyalgia patients, it was found that increased pain sensitivity is associated with greater sleep disturbance…”

    • How can i talk about pillow without using the pillow?
    • Is there anything to put inside the pillow for the user to interact with?

I was trying to brainstorm what are the essential points to make for my archive. Trends of how we live verses the research & development of pillow.

I still can’t decide on the final outcome yet.img013

Then I came across this book: Festive Graphics. I found a lot of the technical drawings and packaging that i am looking for. They have narrative, they can be either words or images or both. They are humorous.

In my pillow time capsule project, I’ve made an assumption that lifestyle 2000 years later will be quite different from us, therefore, my project presents the essences of a pillow tie in with the current social issues and trends to reflect on how we live and spend our bed time.

We have been constantly reported about the change of human lifestyle due to the technological advancement. We need to work efficiently, multi-taskable and constantly chasing for more time. Few inventions have made all these possible: Internet, emails, Internet messaging and video calling bringing everyone closer but also cut down the real activity of communication. Unknowingly, we are relying on a set of instructions (just text) for communication day in and day out. We have developed no-patience for matters that are not easily understandable or recognizable. Using this as a platform to start with, my time capsule shall be designed in an instructional style with instructional text and technical illustrations to relate the subject matter of pillow. At the same time, I am also predicting how lives would have evolved, maybe almost robotic, 2000 years from now that people will still understand my presentation of the time capsule that is technically clean and clear.

Through reorganizing information from the archive, the properties of a pillow can make relationships with the current affairs. Such of these may include: function of a pillow is to support your head while asleep so that your muscles could rest → constant research and development of pillow stuffing materials → stressful lifestyle and not getting quality sleep → the change of the aesthetic look of a pillow allow other activities (reading and listening to music) to happen on the bed itself → causing deteriorating health and developing allergies against microorganism found
    on the pillow.

In my moodboard, I’ve looked at some technical drawings, labels and installation works. Haven got a clue of these will work.

Reported by design*sponge.com, dwellstudio has a change in their collection direction, moving towards abstraction.

    Screen - Dwellstudio

Quoting from dwellstudio’s flash site “Some patterns developed were drawn by hands with pen and ink in our studio.”

My thoughts: I wonder does bedlinen designs reference to particular fashion trends, social context and blah blah blah… What kind bedlinen designs are the best sellers? How is the design department in a bedlinen company like? What are the considerations to bare in mind when designing for the bedlinen?

    Many many questions.

    Screen - Illupillow

An integration of pillow and mattress with LED reading lamp. I believe this is more towards a furniture piece than an actual pillow.

My thoughts: As i am doing research, i realise many designers make use of everyday familiar objects to improvise, to redesign, to rethink into other functionality probabilities. Many actually maintain the look, handling size and initial function to retain this familiarity among the users. They then challenge and imagine how their crazy invention can be developed further.
